Construction of the vessel, which was to be called Global Dream, was halted earlier this year after Dream Cruises collapsed along with sister brands Star Cruises and Crystal Cruises. A released exterior rendering of the Dream-turned-Disney ship does display some architectural changes from Global Dream. Most recently, the Disney Treasure aft was delivered Papenburg, Germany for installation, and Disney now has a ship’s log page tracking its progress toward completion. MV Werften administrator Christoph Morgen handed a symbolic key to the yard to Meyer Managing Director Bernard Meyer a week ago, paving the way for the continuation of work on the vessel.

UPDATE: Work Begins On Disney Cruise Line’s Global Dream Ship, Could Be Delayed Until 2026

GHK's total investment in this shipbuilding project is ~EUR 3,1 billion (~USD 3,44 billion). Designed to be 208,000 tons, Global Dream would be the world's seventh-biggest cruise ship if it debuted today. The surprise comes by way of Disney Cruise Line being the cruise line to purchase, complete and operate the unfinished Global Dream. The company has an established reputation for not only building bespoke ships, but also fully designing them from scratch from the keel up. In this case, the superstructure is already complete, and interiors are ready to be installed. The unveiling of the ship's name arrives almost a year after Disney announced the acquisition of the partially completed newbuild -- which was originally intended for Dream Cruises and was set to be called Global Dream.

What Will the Ship Look Like Under Disney Cruise Line's Leadership?

The companies have scheduled the completion of the vessel for January 2027.Imoto, which is a leading operator of coastal feeder ships,... However, in Germany, the speculation is that the price is approximately €1 billion. The German government could suffer a loss of as much as €250 million or more due to loan guarantees to MV Werften and possible concessions for the sale and completion of the cruise ship. The ship will be given a new name and have some of its features redesigned by the world-famous Walt Disney Imagineers.

MV WERFTEN’s order book includes six more ships, to be completed by 2021; the “Crystal Ravel” will be handed over in April. The company began construction on the first of three expedition mega yachts in Stralsund this past January with the first delivery at the end of 2019. Construction on the second Global Class ship will begin in early 2019 for delivery at the end of 2021. Wismar, March 8, 2018 | Accompanied by the sound of ships’ horns, construction work began on the first Global Class ship today. The Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig, and the Chairman and CEO of Genting Hong Kong, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, launched the flame cutter for the first steel cut in the Wismar yard of MV WERFTEN.

The U.S.-based cruise line plans to work with the Meyer Werft shipyard to complete the ship ahead of a 2025 debut. Disney Cruise Line will take over the ship’s construction with the popular Meyer Werft shipbuilding company based in Germany. The vessel construction will be adjusted to have the signature Disney look, along with features and experiences for which the cruise line is well-known. Construction will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish. The cruise line says they expect the passenger capacity to be reduced to approximately 6,000 from the maximum of 9,000 Dream Cruises had announced.

Before its financial demise, though, Global Dream made headlines as the cruise industry anticipated its arrival as the next largest cruise ship in the world -- at least by capacity. This number was somewhat exaggerated given only 4,700 could be accommodated in lower berths, with the higher tally taking into account potential third guests or more in each of the 2,350 staterooms and suites. Global Dream has been sitting unfinished at the former MV Werften shipyard in Germany since the shipbuilder filed for bankruptcy earlier this year because of the pandemic. Disney plans to work with another of the country’s shipbuilders, Meyer Werft, to finish the construction of the boat. Once complete, the ship will be renamed and decorated with the Mickey Mouse-inspired colors found on the rest of Disney Cruise Line ships, according to a press release. After several months of undefinition, the unfinished Global Dream was sold to Disney Cruise Line last November.

The project also secures employment for hundreds of former MV Werften employees and will provide opportunities for numerous maritime industry suppliers in the region. The ship was originally scheduled to be already sailing in 2022 under Genting’s Dream Cruises brand and as one of the largest cruise ships in the world, rivaling Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels. CELEBRATION, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2022) – Today, Disney announced the acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring the magic of a Disney Cruise Line vacation to new global destinations.

Areas such as a large casino will be also redesigned in keeping with Disney’s family-oriented cruises. The 208,000-gross-ton ship -- previously known as Global Dream -- will resume construction at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany. The shipyard is now under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish.

The ship was about 72 per cent finished when the German government and Genting could not agree in December on plans to finance $620 million to help complete it and keep the shipyard in business, according to a letter Mr Kok Thay wrote to creditors in January. Genting reported a record loss of $1.7bn in May as the pandemic ravaged the cruise ship industry. Disney took over the vessel without warranty claims and stated that would complete/rebuild the liner at its own risk and expense, planning to invest ~EUR 1 billion for its conversion. It was commented that the cheap sale could result in a failure of the guarantees given for this shipbuilding project. Reportedly, GHK-Genting had taken out loans of EUR 650+ million from a consortium of 16 banks for Global Dream. To a large extent, the loans' repayment was secured by guarantees from the federal (Germany's) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state governments.

The ship will join the Disney Wish, which debuted in June 2022 and was also constructed by Meyer Werft but at the Papenburg shipyard. Other ships in the fleet include Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy. Disney Cruise Line announced on Saturday that the former Global Dream will debut as the Disney Adventure, and confirmed its plans to deploy the ship to Asia when it starts revenue service in 2025. As the company that was building the ship went into insolvency, Disney was able to get a good deal from the creditors. So even with the cost of expected upgrades and new finishes, it will be a quick and affordable way to bring the Disney fleet to 6 ships.

With the new Dream Cruises brand, the company started to offer a separate brand for each of its market segments, with the other two being Crystal Cruises (luxury segment) and Star Cruises (contemporary segment). The 2025-built (as Global Dream) cruise ship Disney Adventure is currently under construction in Germany, being built by Meyer Werft Wismar for DCL-Disney Cruise Line. This is the first of two GLOBAL class units ordered by GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd (1993-founded/2022-defunct) for the holding company's Asian subsidiaries/brands Dream Cruises and Star Cruises. The first liner (Global Dream) was scheduled for launch in 2020 (inauguration in December) but, due to the Coronavirus crisis was postponed for 2022-Q1. The ship will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, where it originally was under construction, under the management of Meyer Werft.

In its announcement, Disney said its designers, known as Imagineers, would work with Meyer Werft to add Disney-themed features to the ship. Once completed, the vessel will have "innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart," the line said. Cunard Line took delivery today, April 19, from Fincantieri on its first new cruise ship built for the storied brand in 14 years. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members. At a huge 208,000 gross tonnage that would make this ship the 7th largest cruise ship world-wide if it were sailing today. The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available.
